Building Safer Spaces
The Building Safer Spaces Project is a partnership between Port Augusta City Council and the South Australian Government to create a safer, more vibrant and welcoming city for residents, businesses and visitors.
The project combines public safety infrastructure with practical support for local businesses, helping strengthen the Port Augusta CBD through improved security, better streetscapes and crime prevention initiatives.
Stage One (2025): Improving Public Safety
A $200,000 State Government investment delivered significant safety improvements across the city, including:
- A comprehensive city-wide safety audit
- Installation of 22 new CCTV cameras throughout the CBD and key public spaces
- Enhanced surveillance in high-use community areas
These improvements provide greater security and help create safer public places for everyone.
Stage Two (2026): Business Safety Improvement Grants
The Business Safety Improvement Grant supports local businesses to co-invest in practical upgrades that improve safety and strengthen the appearance of the town centre.
Guided by Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles, the program aims to:
- Reduce the risk of crime and vandalism
- Improve safety for staff and customers
- Enhance shopfront presentation and street appeal
- Contribute to a more active and welcoming CBD
By working together with local businesses, the Building Safer Spaces Project is helping create a city centre where people feel safer, businesses can thrive, and the community is encouraged to connect and enjoy Port Augusta.
