Port Augusta City Council is pleased to announce that funding has been successfully secured for the upgrade of the runway at Port Augusta Airport. This vital infrastructure project has received support from the Australian Federal Government, as announced by Catherine King, Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, and Local Government.

The upgrade will enhance the airport’s capacity and safety, ensuring it continues to meet the needs of our community and support regional connectivity.

In Port Augusta, $842,500 will support targeted runway pavement strengthening. The works will strengthen sections of the runway to improve its surface, extend its lifespan, and improve safety. This will support the Royal Flying Doctor Service’s (RFDS) 24-hour operations based at the airport, as well as passenger, charter, and general aviation.

At a recent Council meeting, it was resolved to endorse an application for $842,500 in grant funding from the Regional Airport Program Round 4 towards the total project cost of $1,685,000 to strengthen the runway. Additionally, the Council authorised the Mayor and Chief Executive Officer to sign and seal any necessary documents to formalise the funding agreement.

Importantly, the Council’s financial contribution to this project comes from reserve funds allocated for depreciation, ensuring that rates will not be impacted—a significant win for the Port Augusta community.

CEO John Banks expressed enthusiasm about the funding success, stating, “This upgrade is a major step forward for Port Augusta, enhancing our airport infrastructure without placing additional financial burden on our ratepayers. We appreciate the Australian Federal Government support in helping to secure our region’s future growth and connectivity.”
