Port Augusta City Council is pleased to announce that the newly constructed East Side Foreshore Pontoon has been officially handed over to Council by the State Government and is now open for public use.

The pontoon, located along the East Side Foreshore, provides a new recreational and access point to the Upper Spencer Gulf. Designed to support a range of water-based activities, including fishing, kayaking, and swimming, the structure enhances accessibility and enjoyment of the foreshore for residents and visitors alike.

Mayor Linley Shine and Geoff Brock MP welcomed the handover, highlighting the importance of improved recreational infrastructure for the community.

“The East Side Foreshore Pontoon is a fantastic addition to our waterfront, providing greater opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy the natural beauty of Port Augusta,” Mayor Linley Shine said.

“We thank the State Government for their investment in this project, which enhances our city’s liveability and tourism potential.”

The pontoon features a floating platform with easy-access entry points, ensuring it is suitable for people of all ages and abilities. The project was funded by the State Government as part of broader efforts to improve regional infrastructure and waterfront activation in Port Augusta.

Port Augusta’s waterfront continues to see welcome improvements, with the smaller floating swimming pontoon at the East Side Foreshore also returned to its original location. More than ten years ago, strong weather conditions caused it to drift south, where it remained out of reach for most swimmers.

Thanks to the efforts of GCMarine and Council, the floating pontoon has been safely relocated, making it easier for swimmers of all abilities to enjoy.

With the Port Augusta Wharf refurbishment also recently announced, these upgrades create more opportunities for locals and visitors to enjoy the Spencer Gulf.

Port Augusta City Council invites the community to enjoy the new pontoon while following the safety guidelines displayed on-site.
