New CBD Mural connected to children’s literacy.
Renowned artist Caroline Lejeune, originally hailing from Paris and now making waves in Melbourne, has transformed the walls of the Port Augusta Civic Centre and Public Library with an extraordinary new mural.
Titled “Tales of the Infinite” the mural is a vibrant collage of fantastical landscapes and characters that seamlessly blend into one another. The mural captures the essence of boundless imagination and storytelling, intended to captivate the hearts and minds of young people. Caroline worked collaboratively with fellow artist Alexander Grilanc to bring the mural concept to life.
The mural was made possible with funding from the Benevolent Society whose aim for the mural was to invite community engagement with the library, promoting life-long learning. Port Augusta children’s numeracy and literacy levels rate much lower compared to other regions and the funding was provided to engage children with both the mural and the library, to support lifelong education and learning. The selection of the mural design was community-driven with over 70% of votes in Carolines favour.
Mayor Linley Shine is delighted by the new mural “Port Augusta commitment to lifelong learning and improving children’s literacy and numeracy is important for their future and the future of this community. Mayor Shine stated.
“Families play a significant part in the commitment to their children’s literacy. We know, based on science, that reading to a baby and young child supports development of their brain neural pathways. I encourage all children and families to come and enjoy the mural and become register as a borrower with the library. I also want to thank, on behalf of the community, the Benevolent Society, none of this would have been possible without their support”. Mayor Shine stated.
CEO John Banks stated “The completion of this mural shows the city's commitment to vibrancy and culture and highlights the mural artists creativity. Port Augusta now has many murals and sculptures, with 16 located in the CBD. They create a vibrant trail for both locals and tourists to enjoy. We are also launching a new CBD Mural Trail today which can be found on the Wadlata Outback Centre website and brochures will be at various Council locations. Councils Community Development team had fun working with the Benevolent Society, the Artists, the Public Library, and the community to bring this mural to life.”
