National Volunteer Week is being held during 18-24 May. This year’s theme is ‘Changing communities. Changing lives.'

The team of volunteers who assist Port Augusta City Council with various events and business activities are being recognised and thanked by Mayor Brett Benbow this week.

Mayor Brett Benbow highly appreciates the 70 volunteers who work across a range of Council departments. “Volunteers make a huge difference to our community, not only do they assist us with core business activities, they also form networks and friendships and learn new skills.” Mayor Benbow stated.

Mayor Benbow said volunteers make a significant contribution and their impact makes a difference to our community.

“From the range of volunteers who grow plants at the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden to those who assist at the Yarta Purtli Art Gallery, their contribution to the community is appreciated.”

There are 70 volunteers at Port Augusta City Council. They provide voluntary work in these areas:

  • Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden
  • Ryan Mitchell Swimming Pool
  • Yarta Purtli Cultural Centre
  • Library
  • Mens Shed
  • Child Care Centre
  • Health Focus

Although events which are usually held during National Volunteer Week are cancelled due to COVID-19, Mayor Benbow still encourages all organisations to thank their volunteers and to consider moving their events to an online format or acknowledge volunteers in different ways via social media or other digital formats.
