Port Augusta City Council is excited to announce the commencement of an after-school learning club partnership for Stirling North Primary School (SNPS) students, as a component of the ‘Let’s Go’ and ‘Let’s Discover’ programs funded by The Benevolent Society and Westpac Group’s Safer Children, Safer Communities program. The Let’s Go Learning Club will feature fun, interactive, and educational activities designed to boost participants’ confidence with literacy and numeracy concepts.

Mayor Linley Shine stated “The Benevolent funding has led to the development of a school-run program designed to support improved literacy and numeracy. By Council working with Stirling North Primary School, together we have developed a relevant and engaging program tailored to the needs of the children. We are thrilled to be launching this partnership to enhance the learning of Stirling North Primary School students in a fun and inclusive setting.”

Adam Wilson SNPS Principal, stated “With the financial support of the Council and Benevolent Society we have been able to develop a fun learning program for 2024, which is targeted and enhances student’s literacy and numeracy capability. Whilst this program is a ‘test program’ it has been developed to provide students with additional opportunities to improve their educational and social and emotional wellbeing, outside of normal school hours. I am really pleased with the number of students and their families who have volunteered to participate in this inaugural program.”

“We are acutely aware that numeracy and literacy issues, if addressed at a young age can change the trajectory of a young person’s life. This program is an investment in the future of our youth and our community. This program has been developed so that it is transferable to other schools who might also want to participate. Council can provide resources and support whilst we have the Benevolent funding available, it is hoped during this period the value of the program is realised. Community Development Officer Clementine Menz is wanting to identify schools that will work with Council to develop a program aimed at 0 to 4 year old children and she can be contacted by reaching out to Council.” stated Port Augusta City Council Manager Strategy, People and Culture Theressa Hines.

The Let’s Go Learning Club will run after school during Terms 2, 3 and 4 in 2024, and if successful it is anticipated to continue in 2025.

The curriculum for the program has been developed by the Stirling North Primary School and is designed to be accessible to all levels and transferable to other learning institutions.

The focus of the program is ensuring that children do not fall behind in literacy and numeracy milestones during the lower primary years and where they do, they are able to access additional support. Activities include elements of physically active play, socialisation, art and music.

Council is in discussion with other primary schools to provide support to develop Learning Clubs in 2024/2025 specifically targeting literacy and numeracy.
