2021 National Volunteer Week Celebrations
Recognise. Reconnect. Reimagine is the theme for this year’s National Volunteer Week held during 17-23 May.
The team of volunteers who assist Port Augusta City Council with various events and business activities celebrated with a morning tea on Wednesday 19th May at the Yarta Purtli Cultural Centre. The Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden received a Premiers Certificate for their volunteering contributions and Chris Nayda received an individual recognition for her valuable work at the garden.
Mayor Brett Benbow attended and thanked the 52 volunteers who work across a range of Council departments. “Volunteers make a huge difference to our community, not only do they assist us with core business activities, they also form networks and friendships and learn new skills.” Mayor Benbow stated.
Mayor Benbow said “Volunteers make a significant contribution, and their impact makes a difference to our community, and without them some of our core activities, promotions and operations could not function.”
There are approximately 52 volunteers at Port Augusta City Council, who provide voluntary work in across these areas:
- Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden
- Yarta Purtli Cultural Centre
- Library
- Mens Shed
- Child Care Centre
- Health Focus
- Lea Memorial Theatre
“I encourage all local organisations to thank their volunteers this week, and treat them to something a little special.” Mayor Benbow stated.
Evidence shows that volunteering connects us to others in our local communities, to better mental well-being or to potential pathways to employment. When we help others in our community or give our time to a cause we value, we also give back to ourselves.
