Aboriginal artists and their works have been brought together by Arts Officers and the Community Development team at the Port Augusta Cultural Centre - Yarta Purtli to celebrate the exhibitions twelfth year.

The exhibition was the brainchild of the late Marvin McKenzie Senior, who's vision to have an Aboriginal art show ensured the Aboriginal community would have a space to showcase their work.

‘Malka’ is a word used by a number of Aboriginal language groups within the Port Augusta region, meaning mark or painting.

“This exhibition had 38 entries from locals and regional artists. School Children and Elders also submitted entries, we were particularly impressed with some of the School submissions,” Jo Newell the Manager for Community Development at Port Augusta City Council stated.

CEO of Port Augusta City Council John Banks stated “The Malka Art Prize is a stepping-stone for Aboriginal artists to become discovered and showcased. Last year’s winner artist Juanella McKenzie has gone on to feature at exhibitions in Adelaide and in the prestigious Ramsay Art Prize as a finalist.”
