The Strategic Directions Plan was endorsed by Council on 14th April 2020 and will shape the future of Port Augusta from 2019-2029.

It is a shared vision for the future of the city and will play an important role in influencing Council’s planning, policy making and allocation of resources.

The strategic planning framework has three levels:

Port Augusta City Council aspires to build on history and become a Regional Hub for Transport, Sustainable Industries, Mining and Defence Services, Tourism, Retail and Business, Government and Non-Government Services, Education, Recreation and Culture.

There are four external themes Community, Economy, Environment, and Infrastructure, to shape the future of our town and one corporate theme: Governance and Financial Sustainability each with an associated goal.

Mayor Brett Benbow stated “Even with the recent economic changes, Port Augusta continues to prepare for the influx of contractors and their families whilst new development projects progresses. We have taken this time to plan and work with contractors for when things start functioning normally again.”

Port Augusta City Council will continue to review its operations to ensure they are functioning in an economical and sustainable way. With strong leadership and good governance the Council will maintain a focus on achieving the vision and goals identified within this plan.

Port Augusta City Council CEO John Banks is keen to see the strategies from the plan developed, “The Strategic Directions document will establish Councils focus and enhance clarity about its role in the provision of services and governance as a Leader, Enabler and Service Provider over the next 10 years.”
