Dual Naming of Public Places
Port Augusta is a community steeped with a rich heritage of Aboriginal peoples, and the Port Augusta City Council developed a Reconciliation Action Plan in 2022 to drive our journey toward a positive shared future grounded in respect, strong relationships and equality. As part of Council’s commitment to increase understanding, value and recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, the Reconciliation Action Plan provides that Council will consider the dual naming of public places in Barngarla and Nukunu language, in consultation with local traditional owners.
Council, at its meeting held on 13 August 2024, resolved that a Public Consultation and Engagement process be undertaken to seek proposed names and locations that may be suitable for dual naming.
You now have the opportunity to propose names and locations to Council for consideration as part of this dual naming initiative, in accordance with the following:
- Proposed names are to be in Barngarla or Nukunu language and submissions should identify the language of the proposed name, the meaning or significance of the proposed name and whether this name is proposed for a specific public place.
- Proposed locations are to be public places within the Port Augusta City Council area.
Following the public consultation process, the submissions will be presented to Council’s Aboriginal Community Advisory Group and a briefing session will be held for Elected Members to consider the proposals.
