Proposed Community Battery for Port Augusta
Consultation closes Monday 23 November 2026
Port Augusta City Council, in collaboration with the Government of South Australia, is inviting community feedback on a proposal to install a 700 kilowatt and 1,828 kilowatt-hour community battery in Port Augusta as part of the emPowering SA program.
The proposed community battery will be situated in a Council reserve adjacent the SAPN electricity substation on Bryant Street/Ellis Close, Port Augusta West and would store surplus renewable energy from the electricity grid and release it during peak demand periods, at night, or when the grid requires additional support.
The initiative forms part of a broader Virtual Power Plant (VPP) network, which aims to help deliver more affordable electricity to eligible households that cannot support their own solar panels or a battery, and improve the stability and resilience of South Australia's energy grid.
The proposed community battery would be owned by the Government of South Australia and operated by AGL as part of the VPP network.
