Q. Why is Council hosting the 2025 SA Masters Games?

A. On 13 December 2022, Council resolved the following:

1. Supports the submission of an application to host the 2025 SA Masters Games subject to adequate receipt of letters of support from Port Augusta Sporting Associations and Clubs committing resources to coordinate their respective sports during the event.
2. That Council notes that should the application to host the 2025 SA Masters Games be successful that a future budget allocation exceeding $150,000 will be required.

Q. What are the benefits of hosting the SA Masters Games?

A. Benefits are both social and economic.

The social benefits are:

• increased sporting opportunities for the community
• promotion of healthy lifestyles and physical activity
• increased capability for sporting organisations in the region to run programs and activities
• social and community cohesion from the region coming together to run a successful Games.

The economic benefits to the community are:

• increase support for local sport clubs and associations through income, exposure and increased membership
• extensive and invaluable media coverage for the City
• increased potential to attract and conduct future major competitions and events to the City
• increased economic activity into the region from tourism
• showcase the excellent sporting facilities the City of Port Augusta has to offer.

As a comparison, Port Pirie estimated a local economic contribution of $640,000 when hosting the 2019 SA Masters Games.

Q. Why is the cost of the SA Masters Games being funded by the ratepayers?

A. Council balances services to the community across all ratepayer groups. The SA Masters Games targets older residents and supports community organisations and local businesses.

Q. What are the next steps?

A. Council will be guided by Sport SA in how to plan the 2025 SA Masters Games. These discussions have not yet taken place but when they do relevant information will distributed through the appropriate channels.

Q. When will the SA Masters Games happen?

A. The Opening Ceremony will be on 9 April 2025 at Central Oval

Events of the SA Masters Games will run from the 10th – 13th April 2025.
