The 2022/2023 Annual Business Plan and Budget was approved by Elected Members at a Port Augusta City Council meeting on Tuesday 12th July 2022.

2022/23 will be the second year in a row that Port Augusta Council has budgeted for a reduction in general rates after a 0% increase in general rates in the 2020/21 financial year.

Council expressed concern that it was challenging to set a budget which ensures the mix of mandatory and discretionary services, as well as capital works, and meets the needs of the local community, businesses and visitors to the region within current financial constraints.

Mayor Brett Benbow stated “It’s a challenging time for Council as well as all ratepayers with costs of living increasing. Individuals, businesses, and community groups all have different views as to what services and programs Council should be providing.”

The 2022/23 Annual Business Plan and Budget continues to focus on renewal of existing assets with over $10.5 million being budgeted for capital expenditure.

The budget is based on Council’s adopted Long Term Financial Plan to improve the financial sustainability of Council and efficiencies have been included in the budget to achieve the deficit outlined in the plan.

“Port Augusta City Council will continue to lobby for legislative change in rating of renewable energy projects and the provision of mandatory rate rebates, both will impact significantly on Port Augusta City Council.” Mayor Brett Benbow stated.

“There are a number of new developments proposed for the region and Council are hopeful that this will result in growth in the number of rateable properties in Port Augusta.” Mayor Benbow stated.
