Nominating as an Elected Member

Nominations for council elections open Tuesday 4 September and close 12noon Tuesday 18 September 2018.

If you are eligible to vote in your local council elections, with very few exceptions, you are also eligible to stand for a position on council.

If you consider yourself to be invested in the future of your community, are willing to learn and participate, and prepared to contribute strategically to decision making processes that benefit your broader community, then you should explore what it takes to be a councillor and nominate yourself for council elections.

If you are interested in representing the people of your community on council, the Electoral Commission of SA and the Local Government Association (SA) provide a range of resources to help you understand the role and responsibilities of being a councillor.

To assist prospective candidates to consider what is needed to prepare for becoming a Council Member the Local Government Association (LGA) has prepared the following document: 'Make a difference - nominate for Council', which will be published in July.

If you are unsure as to whether you are eligible you should contact the Returning Officer for the Council election, telephone (08) 7424 7400.

The LGA and Council will also run information seminars for candidates during August, 2018. Details will be made available on this website.
