Youth Advisory Committees (YACs) are groups of young people aged 12-25 years who work in partnership with local councils to provide advice on decisions that affect their lives. However, YACs also plan activities and projects that encourage young people’s active engagement in their local communities.
Each YAC differs depending on their location, the demographics and also the social issues faced in their region. Some YACs also operate as formal section 41 sub-committee of Council, others use informal structures, clusters (two or more councils) or operate as interest groups that form and disband as required.
The purpose of the Youth Advisory Committee is
Port Augusta City Council and headspace- Port Augusta have joined forces to have a combined Youth Reference Group to strengthen local youth voice in Port Augusta and provide opportunities for young people to become actively involved in the community.
