Outline

The Port Augusta Cultural Centre - Yarta Purtli, is a newly developed arts and cultural hub in the central business district of Port Augusta. The Cultural Centre supports and encourages community and individual participation in all facets of the arts and culture. "Yarta Purtli" is a Nukunu word meaning Place of the Stars.

The multi-purpose Cultural Centre consists of three (3) unique areas - Barracks, Gallery (two (2) spaces), and the Institute Theatre complex.

The Barracks/courtyard space is a popular outdoor venue used by the community and visiting performers for live performances, special events and private functions.

The two gallery spaces provide quality venues for the display of all cultural art forms generated by local, intrastate and interstate artists. However, our focus is showcasing local artist and crafts people from Port Augusta and surrounding communities. In partnership with Country Arts SA, two to three touring exhibitions are presented per year, complimenting local content.

The Institute Theatre complex houses a well-equipped stage in the main theatre, with retractable seating for 122 people. Attached to the Theatre are two dressing rooms and the 'Green Room', which doubles as a dressing room come meeting room.

A large kitchen in the main theatre is also available for use. At the front of the Theatre complex is a small meeting room with adjoining small kitchen with tea and coffee facilities only, which is used mainly by not-for-profit community groups for their projects and community meetings.

The Port Augusta Cultural Centre - Yarta Purtli is owned and operated by the Port Augusta City Council, in partnership with Country Arts SA.
